SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ENKANYINI BUILDING

  • Our residence was designed and built by STAG African - a construction company that focuses on developing not only comfortable student accommodation but also environmentally-friendly.

  • eNkanyini was built from lightweight steel and Versapanel - all re-usable materials (you may hear some residents lovingly referring to the building as 'cardboard box').

  • There are several solar panels on the roof of the building, providing us with emergency lights in times of need (we are looking at you, Eskom).

  • Our beautiful quad is watered with grey water from the showers to minimise water use.

  • We are as environmentally-friendly as it gets and have won the Green Cup 2 years in a row for being the most 'green' and sustainable residence on campus!

THE POD SYSTEM

Our residence consists of 26 pods. These pods are like little families of eNkanyini. Each pod has 8 single rooms, communal area, two shower rooms and two rest rooms. The pods are identical and the only difference is the location. The residents take part in room allocations (kamerskiet) during the preceding year and 'skiet' for a pod that they want to stay in during the year that follows. We are also the only residence on campus that provides junior students with single rooms.

"All this talk about pod-life.. but where will I be placed as a newcomer?"

First years will be randomly allocated to their pods by the House Committee with the residents willing to take in newcomers. Males live with males, and females with females. A minimum of 2 newcomers will be placed into a pod so that everyone has a buddy. 'Newcomers' does not necessarily mean high school graduates - due to our unique set-up, the residence placement office sends the BSc transfers our way as well as 2nd year Occupational Therapists and 3rd year Speech Therapists. We pride ourselves in having such a diverse group living in eNkanyini.

Additionally, the pods with newcomers are preferably facing the quad to promote participation in various res activities (and we have plenty).

There is usually one mixed gender pod (depending on a year). However, the university policy dictates that first years are not to be placed in mixed pods.

POD FACILITIES

The communal area - it comprises of a kitchen and an open area. Each pod is provided with two fridges and a microwave (students are discouraged to bring either as this tends to take up unnecessary space). The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, a stove as well as a whole lot of cabinets and drawers.

Kettle - you will find a HydroBoil in the communal area that provides boiling water on demand which is very convenient. No need for a kettle!

P.S. most of our residents are known for their impeccable coffee making skills.

Table - there are two tables joined together in the communal area of each pod as well as 8 chairs. Perfect for some pod-bonding dinners!

Laundry area - a fully-equipped washing room with several ample washing machines and tumble dryers are available. eNkanyini also employs a wonderful laundry lady (Mary-Ann) for those that are not so inclined to do their washing. We share this facility with a senior residence, Nkosi Johnson House. Washing lines are also available.

Sports fields - one of the perks of our location is that we are right next to the hockey, rugby and soccer fields; all the sporting events usually occur right outside our windows. There are various other sports facilities on campus: tennis courts, squash courts, Maties gym, a climbing wall and a sports center.

Braai area - if we haven't convinced you yet that our residence is the state-of-art facility, this will. We have a brand new braai area with two built-in braai's available for the residents to use.

Wi-Fi ports - last, but not least, each pod has its own Wi-Fi port, free to use for all of its inhabitants.
